What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses guided relaxation, focused attention and positive suggestions to help you explore thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

During hypnotherapy, you are guided into a deeply relaxed and focused state, sometimes called a trance. This is a natural state of attention, similar to becoming absorbed in a book or daydreaming. Often to a scenario or place where you find peace.

You are not asleep or unconscious, and you do not lose control. You can hear what is being said, communicate and choose to stop at any time.

Hypnotherapy aims to help you explore unhelpful patterns, develop new ways of thinking and support positive changes in your life.

What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session?

Your first session will usually begin with a conversation about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what you would like support with and what you hope to achieve.

I will explain how hypnotherapy works, answer any questions and make sure you feel comfortable before we begin.

During the hypnosis part of the session, I will gently guide you into a relaxed and focused state, often using calming words, breathing techniques or visualisation.

While you are in this state, I may use carefully chosen suggestions or imagery that relate to your goals.

You remain aware and in control throughout. You do not have to share anything you are uncomfortable discussing, and you can open your eyes or stop the process whenever you wish.

At the end of the session, I will guide your attention back to your surroundings, and we can take time to talk about your experience.

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Some people feel deeply relaxed, while others simply notice a greater sense of focus.

What Can Hypnotherapy Help With?

Hypnotherapy may be helpful for adults who want support with:

  • Stress and anxiety – Developing relaxation techniques and finding ways to manage anxious thoughts.

  • Confidence and self-esteem – Working towards feeling more confident and comfortable in yourself.

  • Fears and phobias – Exploring responses to situations that cause fear or discomfort.

  • Chronic Pain

  • Management of Health Conditions

  • Habits and behaviours – Supporting changes to unwanted habits and patterns.

  • Sleep difficulties – Encouraging relaxation and developing healthier sleep routines.

  • Motivation and focus – Working towards personal goals and building confidence in your abilities.

  • Emotional well-being – Finding ways to manage everyday pressures and feel more balanced.

Hypnotherapy is not a guaranteed solution, and its effectiveness varies depending on the person and the difficulty being addressed. It can be used alongside other therapeutic approaches where appropriate.

Hypnotherapy and Neurodiversity

Everyone experiences relaxation, concentration and imagination differently.

For neurodivergent adults, including autistic people and those with ADHD, hypnotherapy can be adapted to individual communication styles, sensory needs and preferences.

You do not need to sit perfectly still, maintain eye contact or visualise images in your mind for hypnotherapy to be explored.

Some people prefer clear, direct language, while others respond better to imagery or storytelling. We can discuss what feels comfortable and adapt the approach to suit you.

There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis.

Will I Lose Control?

No. Hypnotherapy is not the same as stage hypnosis.

You cannot be made to do something against your wishes simply because you are hypnotised.

You remain able to make decisions, communicate and end the session at any time.

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process, and your comfort, consent and personal choices remain important throughout.

Is Hypnotherapy Right for Me?

Hypnotherapy can offer a different way to work towards positive change, but it may not be suitable for everyone.

Before beginning, we will discuss your needs, relevant health information and what you hope to achieve, so we can decide whether hypnotherapy is an appropriate approach.

For some difficulties, other forms of therapy or medical support may be more suitable.

How much is it?

Hypnotherapy sessions are £50 for one hour.
Discounted prices may apply for those with certain benefits.
